English job interview practice: answer out loud

Reading example answers helps. Saying your own answer out loud, again and again, is what makes it easier in the real interview.

Start with “Tell me about yourself”

Most interviews begin with this question. A good answer is short — three or four sentences. Say what you do now, one relevant experience, and why you want this job.

Example conversation

Interviewer
Thanks for coming in. Could you tell me about yourself?
Candidate
Sure. I currently work as a customer service assistant at a hotel. I help guests with bookings and problems, often in English. I want this role because I would like to grow into a team leader position.
Interviewer
Can you give me an example of a problem you solved?

Common mistakes

  • Telling your whole life story. Keep it focused on work.
  • Memorising a long answer word for word, then forgetting it.
  • Saying “I am good at everything” without one real example.

Useful phrases

  • I currently work as…
  • I have experience in…
  • For example, in my last job I…
  • I am interested in this role because…
  • Could you repeat the question, please?
